Stephen Hawking: Pop-Physicist Gone Wild

Recently, Stephen Hawking, the famed pop-physicist went off on aliens, earth visitations and take-overs and, most recently, stated that God did not create the Universe.  What new evidence does Hawking have that other scientists do not have, for him to draw this new conclusion?  I guess “religion” doesn’t work for him, so it God cannot be the Creator.  He has reversed himself of whether there is a God who created the universe in the beginning.Referring to an Einstein quote that “God does not play dice with the Universe,” Hawking added, “Not only does God play dice, but… he sometimes throws them where they cannot be seen.”  Hawking seems bothered that he is unable figure out God–let alone the Universe.  He alludes to this in his interview with Diane Sawyer, of a few years ago.

What do other scientists of reputation of the past and present have to say in the face of the popularist Hawking?  From Einstein to Hoyle to Wickramasinghe to Maregenau to Eccles, et al., . . . indeed through Stanley Jaki . . . all see things very differently.  Note, not all of these scientists are of the Christian world view.

“On August 14, 1981, an article appeared in the London Daily Express carrying the headline:  Two Skeptical Scientists Put Their Heads Together And Come Up With An Amazing Conclusion: “THERE MUST BE A GOD!”  Who were these scientists and why was this an “amazing conclusion?”   It was an amazing conclusion because they were both atheists. The first was Sir Fred Hoyle, one of Britain’s foremost scientists, a Noble Prize winning astronomer and mathematician.  The second was Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, Professor and chairman of the Department of Astronomy at the University College, Cardiff in England, originally of Sri Lanka.  Wickramasinghe said, “I’ve been a Buddhist, atheist all my life.  I was brainwashed to believe that you cannot include God in science.”  http://www.readyalways.org/Home/does-god-exist</span>   

In the wonderful book titled, The Intellectuals Speak Out About God (Ray Varghese ed.), Jaki writes:  

“While science or scientific cosmology can be a powerful prompting for considering the createdness of the cosmos, it can never become a discourse about creation as such.  The importance of this distinction becomes obvious when creation in time is considered.  If there is a theological theme, it is creation in time, the theme or dogma which supports all other Christian themes and dogmas.  Whenever the meaning of creation in time is weakened, let alone eliminated, the meaning of all other tenets of the Christian creed become weakened or eliminated.” (p. 73)

In the words of the Astronomer Robert Jastrow, “For the scientist who have lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream.  He has scaled the mountains of ignorance, he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.” (Jastrow, God and the Astronomers, p. 116)   

Romans asks us to consider a few things.  Among these include the following statement by the Apostle paul in Romans 1:25, where he addresses cultures that reverse the natural, sensible order of things, and worship the creation, practice distorted morality, etc.  Paul writes:  “For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator . . . ”
